What Can Students

& Universities Expect?

Assisting, Collaborating, and Partnering

Walking Distance works with individual students and student groups by matching hands-on experience and exposure to community peacebuilding models that best complement students’ academic and professional interests and goals. Our organization further alleviates the additional pressures of university administration and instructors to provide enhancement opportunities and practical experiences outside of the classroom, which has become a standard academic expectation among university students.

What Can Communities Expect?

Given the prevalence of environmental conflicts across the globe, WD looks to engage with communities in any part of the world where these issues have created barriers to peace. Our work includes a wide-range of disputes, including land-use and property rights, water scarcity, oil and gas development, deforestation, and climate change.

We are open to working with individuals, groups of any size, and all types of organizations, including private sector, federal/state/local government, nonprofit, etc. Our programming encompasses the array of challenges and issues related to access to environmental resources that affect quality of life.

Providing Comprehensive
Mentoring & Programming

Our programming offers a preparatory curriculum that enhances classroom instruction, with a particular focus on conflict resolution, peacebuilding, diversity/equity/inclusion, and the environment.

We provide opportunities for students to engage in real-world projects and help them maximize learning from their specific community experience whether it’s a group or individual project.

We also offer post-program opportunities to process and measure learning outcomes and professional benefits. This not only helps students to synthesize where their experience fits in their academic learning but also how it applies to their professional skill set and their peacebuilding role as a community member.
